The Difference of Genes Leads to Different Immune Responses of Different Individuals to Influenza Vaccine

Recently, Yale scientists and their collaborators have found several genes and gene clusters related to the human immune response to the influenza vaccine. The study suggests that predict the individual's immune response to influenza vaccine by using individual gene maps may be possible.

As we all know, vaccine is the best way to fight flu, but the effect of the vaccine varies widely among individuals. In order to explore the function of genes in the immune response to influenza vaccine, Yale researchers and collaborators analyzed blood samples from 500 individuals before and after vaccination.

By analyzing the data, the team found several genes or group of genes associated with stronger immune response. The strength of the immune response is determined by the level of the antibody produced by anti- virus. The researchers also found that these genes predict a stronger immune response in people younger than 35, while these genes do not enhance the immune response in people over 60.
