More and More People Die of Respiratory Diseases Linked to Seasonal Flu
According to the new estimates from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US-CDC), more than 650 000 deaths annually are associated with respiratory diseases from seasonal influenza, this data covered various group of countries.
US-CDC indicates that over 75 years of age and the world’s poorest regions accounting for most of the deaths. WHO highlights all countries must work together to prevent and control influenza outbreaks, and improve the ability to detect and respond to outbreaks.
Dr Peter Salama, Executive Director of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme said that the figures emphasize the importance of the prevention influenza prevention for seasonal epidemics. Annual influenza vaccination is recommended to prevent disease and complications from influenza infection, since seasonal influenza is an acute viral infection that spreads easily from person to person and circulates worldwide. Moreover, vaccination is especially important for people at higher risk of serious influenza complications and death, and for health workers.
