World Suicide Prevention Day

Key facts

• Nearly 800,000 people commit suicide each year.

• The number of suicide attempts per year is many times the number of suicides. In the general population, attempted suicide is the biggest risk factor for suicide.

• Suicide is the second leading cause of death in the 15-29 age group.

• Suicides in low- and middle-income countries account for 79% of global suicides.

• The most common suicide methods in the world are drinking pesticides, hanging and using guns.

The International Association for Suicide Prevention will organize World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10. The purpose of this activity day is to raise people's awareness of the problem of suicide prevention. WHO is the co-sponsor of this event day. In the past few years, the International Association for Suicide Prevention has received more than 300 activity reports from about 70 countries, including educational and commemorative activities, press briefings and conferences, and social media campaigns.

In addition, suicide mortality is an indicator under sustainable development goal 3.4. The content of sustainable development goal 3.4 is to reduce premature deaths caused by non-communicable diseases by one third by 2030 through prevention, treatment and promotion of physical and mental health.
